Philippe Moyat

Archaeological Diver

Has worked with Franck Goddio since 2022.

Philippe is a French archaeological diver specializing in underwater and river archaeology. After studying aquaculture, he developed a true passion for scuba diving. This passion first led him to become a professional diver in 2001, working on various technical projects. Over time, he chose to specialize in underwater archaeology to combine his interest in diving with his passion for history.

He is affiliated with the ARTEHIS laboratory at the Université Bourgogne Europe and works as a professional diving instructor at the Lycée de la Mer Paul-Bousquet in Sète. Throughout his career, and thanks to his skills as both a professional diver and an archaeologist, his research has focused on several French rivers, such as the Loire, the Doubs, the Saône, the Hérault, and the Charente – studying bridges, shipwrecks, and settlements dating from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages. He uses modern techniques like underwater photogrammetry, topographic surveys, and 3D modeling to study and preserve the discovered artifacts.

Philippe has participated in numerous archaeological research projects, including work in France for the DRASSM (Department of Underwater and Submarine Archaeological Research) and in Egypt, where he joined Franck Goddio's team in 2022.
