Nicolas Bernier
Underwater Archaeologist
He has collaborated with Franck Goddio since 2022.
PhD in medieval history from the Sorbonne University, he has participated in underwater operations in inland waters and at sea since 2016. While he has often worked on medieval ships and structures, he has also broadened his field of study to include Roman ports and bridges. The opportunity to work in Egypt with IEASM was a real boon, allowing him to further expand this temporal and spatial scope by studying submerged remains of ancient Egypt.
Alongside this underwater archaeological research, Nicolas teaches at the university level. He is also involved in research programs aimed at understanding human interactions with the aquatic environment, such as a transdisciplinary study on the relationship between human and marine animal sounds at the University of La Rochelle, and the experimental archaeology project, La Mona, a reconstructed early medieval ship, in partnership with the Ministry of Culture.
“One of my most recent and excellent memories from a mission in the port of Alexandria was, in 2025, the discovery of the Greek graffito on the keel of the 1st-century ship that Alexander and I were excavating.”
