Marine Chanas
Underwater Archaeologist and Ceramologist
Has worked with Franck Goddio since 2021.
Marine holds a Master's degree in Preventive Archaeology from the University of Montpellier III, a Master's degree in Mediterranean Archaeology from the University of Aix-en-Provence, and a University Diploma in Underwater Archaeology from the University of Nîmes. Before joining the IEASM, Marine worked on excavations along the Rhône River in Arles for the DRASSM (Department of Underwater Archaeological Research) and for the Museum of Ancient Arles, where she conducted a study on thin-walled Iberian ceramics recovered from the Rhône excavations as part of her Master's degree. She has also worked as an underwater archaeologist in the Camargue, the Charente region, Lake Bourget, and off the coast of Cap Corse.
Born in Voiron, Isère, Marine grew up in Corsica and was introduced to scuba diving at a very young age. Curious and passionate, she dreamed while watching documentaries about the excavations of the port of Alexandria, and at the age of 12, she decided to become an underwater archaeologist, hoping to one day participate in this wonderful adventure. From the age of 15, she participated every summer in training digs at the Bibracte site in Burgundy, and later as an archaeology student. A Class 1B diver in 2011, then Class 2B in 2015, she works exclusively on underwater and submarine excavation sites. Her dream of excavating the port of Alexandria came true in 2021, and she also became the assistant of ceramologist Catherine Grataloup of the IEASM. When she is not underwater, Marine works at the Alta Rocca Museum in Levie in South Corsica as a collections manager and also serves as a reserve non-commissioned officer in the National Gendarmerie.
