Treasures from the depths of the sea

White Gold - Submerged - Discovered - Recovered

Frankfurt am Main, Commerzbank
September - December 1997

Hamburg, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe
June - August 1999

The exhibition displayed more than 250 selected artifacts - out of thousands recovered - including 200 examples of ancient Chinese ceramics. All the artifacts presented came from excavations directed by Franck Goddio in collaboration with the National Museum of the Philipines on the wrecks of five cargo ships or "junks," which sank between the 11th and 16th century off the coast of the Philippines.

The junks were excavated between 1985 and 1997. As the original names of the ships are unknown, the wrecks were named according to the site of their discovery: reefs or small villages along the coast.
